Getting kids to eat their five a day from fruit and vegetables can be difficult at the best of times and even for us adults, it can be hard work to fit in those five portions in our busy hectic lives. Taking your five a day in one go as part of a blended healthy drink option is a huge time saver and is a fun and tasty drink for the kids too.

In the past, our kitchens were filled with appliances to get the juice from fruit but leave the pulp behind, but we now know better. The goodness of our fruit comes from the body of the fruits and our modern kitchen blenders are now getting a good workout again with the popularity of the smoothie maker machine. We now eat the whole fruit, not just the juice, giving us the healthy drink to beat all healthy drinks.

Even if you eat fruit and vegetables regularly, making a smoothie as part of your daily diet will be very beneficial. A quick blended smoothie for breakfast is a perfect start to the day, and you do not have to add just fruit to the mix, some bran flakes will give it that breakfast taste and give you that daily fibre boost.

Smoothies are generally low in calories but as they are a fairly thick drink, they tend to fill you up quite easily, making them a great weapon in your calorie busting diet choice. You are getting your full dose of vitamins and minerals in one shot so you do not need to worry that you’re nutritional requirements for the rest of the day are fulfilled. You’ll also be fighting off those free radicals in your body as a healthy smoothie drink is filled with antioxidants. The antioxidants will help protect you against heart disease and cancer and destroying those free radicals will slow down the ageing process. Even better, when you blend up fruit and consume it as a drink, your body will be able to more easily absorb all the nutrients than if you had eaten a pile of fruit whole in bite-size chunks.

Fruit and vegetable smoothies can be built upon by adding extra ingredients. For example, if you want some extra protein then add some almonds or maybe some flax seeds to sharpen up the mind for the day. There are hundreds of recipes for smoothies out there, but trying out your own ingredients is all part of the fun and you can come up with some fantastic tasting drinks and give them your own name too if you want.
