Technology is everywhere and bearing this in mind, more and more people are using different types of technology in several ways.

A recent survey conducted by the Intelligence Group suggests that kids increasingly prefer technology gadgets, such as mobile phones, tablets, iPads, computer games and so on, over the more traditional toys.

Two-thirds of the 800 children surveyed stated that they would prefer to have a gadget bought for them instead of toys to play with. Around 35% of the children surveyed, owned a mobile phone and 28% owned a computer tablet, which incredibly had risen from 5% just two years ago.

Whatever happened to just playing outside with friends making dens, playing hide and seek etc until mealtime? I’m not saying that kids should not use technology, but it’s the fact that there are way too much influence and pressure for them to own the latest gadget and therefore, do not want to do things that kids should be.

What The Experts Say

Experts within the IT industry hold the opinion of these findings being good as children between 7 and 13 are now able to have access to increasing amounts of information and be able to tap into their ‘entrepreneur’ skills. Is this a good thing though? Should children have access to information that can be disturbing for them to read about? On the other hand could information that is accessed by children online be censored better, not only by parents but by authorities to make internet browsing safer for children?

How does a survey manage to illustrate these results? They simply can not, unless they carry out intensive research on the kids themselves and I highly doubt this.

The ‘experts’ may think that this is the case, however, they can not say for sure that kids using technology gadgets from an early age will give the kids that use them, more chance of owning their own business or being more creative etc . Nobody knows yet, but I do not think it’s very healthy for kids, especially aged 12 and under, to own technology gadgets.

Children Browsing Online

Most websites are fine for everyone to go on, despite age, however, sometimes even the innocent sites, such as Facebook can have un-preliminary consequences for anyone, not just young children; although children are much more vulnerable. There have been cases where people on Facebook have caused much hurt and pain to families and individuals; Facebook is an easy way for sexual predators for example to prey on vulnerable groups of people, children being one of them.
Time will certainly tell whether or not this is a good thing or not, but personally, I find this quite disturbing as I think kids should be kids and not living most of their lives using technology – this may take their innocent minds and ways away much sooner and that’s a sorry state of affairs. So parents, buy traditional gifts for kids!
